I get asked alot why there is a crop on 8×10 pics. I figured after all these times, I better answer it here. I will use this beautiful baby as a visual aid.

My camera, my fabulous camera, shoots in a 4:6 aspect ratio. So, when I go to print, if I want the entire frame in the shot, I print either a 4×6, and 8×12 or a 16×24. If you print a 5×7 you will lose some off the top and bottom and with an 8×10 you will lose even more. And yes, it is more difficult to frame an 8×12 than an 8×10. It will need to be custom framed and custom matted and it will probably cost you more, but it will look beautiful. The print on the other hand, will be the same price.

There is the option, if you go to your own lab that they can stretch the picture. This will only happen when you go through another lab and not through me, because I would roll over dead before I stretched a photo. They will look awful. I promise.

Viewing your photos online:

To properly calibrate your monitor, to see the images properly: set your native gamma to 1.75, target gamma to 2.2, target white to 6507 K. Then, you will see what I see. You will see what my lab sees and you will know exactly what to expect.

What if I go through my own lab?

I do offer edited prints for sale through me and through my fabulous printing lab, ProDPI. You can purchase an edited print easily online, from the comfort of your own home. I know. Fun! But, what if you have a hi-res DVD and printing rights and feel like going to your neighborhood Walgreen’s to get a few images printed for your wall. I know, at 29¢ a print, I cannot beat that price. So why spend $20 for a 4×6? For one, the images are edited. With each and every single shoot, I adjust exposure/brightness/contrast/white balance/color mode, etc.. After this process, it is now a proof and I post those pictures in my online proofing site. If a client then chooses to order a print, that image is then taken in to Photoshop and edited, airbrushed, or retouched. I go through and get rid of pimples, smooth the skin a little and make it as perfect as I know how. By the time all is said and done, each individual photograph has been treated as a piece of art and I have spent probably an hour making it just perfect to hang on the wall. Now, if you were to take this image to Walgreen’s to print, all the many hours I have spent working on this photo is for naught. These labs have auto color correct. Auto color and custom color are like water and chocolate. They do not mix well together. I tried it once and will never do it again. They came out orange. Ick. Also, they auto sharpen prints, which means they are no longer smooth, they get choppy. Another big ick. The images will no longer as good as they looked on my computer and why would anyone want that?

Here is an example why you should never go to a mediocre photo lab or allow color correction on your images.

Left came from ProDPI and Right came from Walgreen’s. Ick!

If you do decide to print your own, I would recommend: Mpix. Just click the “do not adjust” or “do not color correct” box and all will be good. But, even still I do not guarantee color unless you go through me.

Large Prints & Gallery Wraps

For larger prints, 11×14 and above. I have the prints dry  mounted on to 1/4″ foam board. Not only does it feel great in your hands, but it make’s the print sturdier and oh, so much easier to display, frame, or anything and increases the life of the print. They are archival quality and will last generations. I also like to box them up all nice, into my own handmade boutique-y eco-packaging. It’s made with Kraft paper, raffia, and my own custom stamp. When it show up at your door, it’s like Chistmas!!! Here’s another close up of the mounting (below).

I also offer Gallery Wraps. They are spectacular! This canvas has been stretched over a 1.5 inch wood frame. The quality is amazing. Colors are gorgeous and it feels incredibly sturdy, like it could survive a small tornado. This one here is 16×24 and hanging on my office wall.
